Kirtan
Kirtan is a form of devotional singing that comes from the Bhakti Yoga tradition, the path of love and devotion to the Divine. It involves chanting sacred mantras or names of gods and goddesses, often with live music like harmonium, drum, jhyali, madal, etc.
Kirtan is not just music, it is a powerful spiritual practice. When we sing with devotion, the sound vibrations open the heart, calm the mind, and connect us with our true self. It helps to remove negative emotions and brings joy, peace, and unity.
Even if someone doesn’t understand the meaning of the words, the energy of the chant has a deep effect. In many yogic and tantric traditions, especially in Nepal, Kirtan is used as a way to awaken the divine energy (Shakti) and invite spiritual presence.
Example: Singing “Om Namah Shivaya” or “Jai Gorakh” together in a group, feeling a sense of connection and inner bliss.
Kirtan can be a joyful, emotional, and healing experience. It takes us beyond the mind and into the heart, into a space of pure devotion and meditation through sound.
