Traditional Yoga
1. Hatha Yoga
Gorkha is named after Guru Gorakhnath, a great yogi and the founder of Hatha Yoga. He is known as a Mahayogi, a Great Tantra Guru. He is respected by the Nath sect, and by followers of both Hinduism and Buddhism for his deep spiritual knowledge and mastery over yogic and tantric disciplines.
The word “Hatha” has a deep meaning. “Ha” stands for the sun and “Tha” for the moon. Hatha Yoga is about balancing these two energies (masculine & feminine energy) inside our body. This idea of balance is also shown in the national flag of Nepal, which includes both the sun and the moon.
Hatha Yoga is not just physical exercise. It is a form of meditation using the body
(shariragata dhyana). If there is no awareness or meditation, it is no longer yoga. When we turn it into just stretching or working out, we lose the real meaning of Hatha Yoga.
In real Hatha Yoga, we do postures (asanas) along with deep breathing, awareness of the mind, and sometimes mantras (sacred sounds). This helps to awaken the Kundalini energy inside us, a powerful spiritual energy that rises through the body and leads to higher awareness.
So, Hatha Yoga is a spiritual practice, not just for the body but also for the mind and soul. It helps us find balance, inner peace, and connection to the divine. It prepares the body and mind for deep meditation (dhyana) and spiritual liberation (moksha).
2. Tantra Yoga
Tantra Yoga is an ancient spiritual path that teaches how to use the body, mind, and energy to reach higher consciousness. people wrongly believe. It is about understanding and transforming our inner energy. Tantra follows five elements space, air, fire, water and earth. Five aspects of hatha, ashtanga, mantra, laya and kundalini yoga forms tantra yoga. So, we can say that it’s a combination of all five yoga where one is grounded from hatha and moves to mind i.e. followed by ashtanga and infused with mantra then laya and kundalini. It is deeply connected to Guru Gorakhnath, a great yogi and spiritual master who is also the founder of Hatha Yoga. He is respected as a Mahayogi and a Tantra master by many traditions in Hinduism and Buddhism.
In Nepal, especially among the Nath yogis and Tantric practitioners, Guru Gorakhnath is seen as a powerful teacher who brought deep spiritual wisdom. He taught that divine energy (Shakti) lives within each person, and through the right practices, this energy can be awakened and guided toward freedom and enlightenment.
Tantra Yoga does not mean magic or rituals as many It includes meditation, mantras, breathing techniques, and sometimes sacred rituals, all done with deep awareness and purpose. The goal is to unite the body, mind, and spirit, and to realize the divine within.
In Tantra, the human body is seen as a temple, and every part of life is considered sacred. There is no rejection of the world rather, it teaches how to live in the world with awareness and spiritual understanding.
Guru Gorakhnath showed that both Hatha Yoga and Tantra Yoga are not separate, they are paths of inner transformation. Both help to awaken the Kundalini energy, and both guide us to a state of balance, peace, and union with the Divine.
In Nepal, this deep tradition still lives on, especially in places connected to Gorakhnath and the Gorkha region, reminding us of our rich spiritual roots and the power of inner awakening.
